Yes it happens. It's real. Simply the state of dream itself is like a small death, your soul just flies and wanders around. The barrier between the world of living and the world of dead dissolves, so you can easily see someone you used to know, currently know, or never seen before. You might receive a warning, foretelling about something good will happen, a demand, or a chat with lost soul about what happened to them, it could even be a sharing of emotional state you have.
Don't freak out if any of this happens. Write down the message asap, before you forget it. After that, read it again carefully, because usually it's not crystal clear, and you have to read between signs.
